What inspired you to start Anaphora?
I met Aurelien (my husband) who has this best friend Cory who are both excellent musicians with big ideas and lots of energy. After also meeting Cory's (now fiance') girlfriend Lisa, a professional publicist, we discovered that we had the combined interest, work experience, and motivation to start an ensemble. It started out as something fun and artistically self-indulgent and we have been lucky that some other people have enjoyed our efforts.
If you could have another outpost of Anaphora, which city would you want it to be in?
Las Vegas. Being from Vegas I'd would LOVE to bring a part of Anaphora back home. I remember when I was living there, it was impossible to throw DIY shows in legitimate venues legally. The entertainment industry out there, at the time, ran everything. They had laws that prevented independent event producers, promoters, and venues from doing any live entertainment for any reasonable amount of time. So...we did most of our shows out in the desert where the cops couldn't (usually) find us. I know a very cool art scene has been emerging over the last 5 years or so. I'd like to help bring up the music scene as well.
If you could invent an instrument, what would it be?
Funny you should ask...As part of my Post-Bacc at SAIC, I took a class on invented instruments. The result was the Saranjello, a mix of Cello, Banjo, and Sarangi. I still have to figure out how to get the thing to handle the pressure while tuned-up. But once I get that worked out, I plan to use it as my primary improvisation instrument.
